The Best Family Photography Locations in San Antonio: Tried and True favorites from a San Antonio Family Photographer
Updated: Sep 23
If you are searching for the best places for family photos in San Antonio, you are probably looking for more than just a pretty backdrop.
You want somewhere your kids can actually be themselves. Somewhere that feels beautiful without feeling overly posed. Somewhere that fits your family, whether you have a toddler who never stops moving, a brand-new baby, teenagers who would rather be anywhere else, or a whole extended family gathering together for the first time in years.
As a San Antonio family photographer, choosing the right location is one of the first things I help my clients with. The location can completely change the feeling of your photographs, and the best location is not necessarily the one that looks most impressive on Instagram.
Some families feel most at home surrounded by live oaks and tall grasses. Others love the architecture and charm of historic San Antonio neighborhoods. Some want their children to have room to run and explore. Others want something quieter and more intimate.
So, if you are looking for the best locations for family photography in San Antonio and the surrounding Hill Country, here are some of my favorite places to consider.

How to Choose the Right Family Photography Location in San Antonio
Before choosing a location, I always think about the people who will actually be there.
A beautiful location is wonderful, but it needs to work for your family.
If you have toddlers, I want somewhere that gives them room to move. If you have a baby, shade and easy access matter more. If you are planning an extended family session, we need enough space for everyone without making the session feel chaotic.
I also consider the season, the time of day, the type of light available, and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.
Are you dreaming of photographs that feel soft and quiet?
Do you want something playful and outdoorsy?
Would you rather have an elegant, historic San Antonio feel?
Or do you want your session to feel like an afternoon spent exploring together?
These are the questions that help me narrow down the perfect location.
The best family photo location is the one that fits the way your family actually wants to spend time together. Some families love open fields and movement, while others feel more at home somewhere architectural, intimate, or closer to the city. If you are still figuring out what kind of session feels right for you, you can explore my San Antonio family photography experience to see how I help families plan everything from location to wardrobe.
Location is only one part of creating a session that feels easy. If you are wondering what the rest of the experience looks like, read what to expect during a family photography session for a full look at planning, photographing, and receiving your gallery.

Not Sure Which Location Is Right for Your Family?
You don't need to choose a location before you book your family session. As your San Antonio family photographer, I'll help you narrow down the options based on your children's ages, the season, your wardrobe, and the way you want your photographs to feel.
Whether that means letting your toddler explore beneath the trees, wandering through one of San Antonio's historic neighborhoods, or finding somewhere quiet where your family can simply be together, we'll choose a setting that makes sense for you.
1. Phil Hardberger Park (8400 NW Military Highway, San Antonio, TX 78231)
Best For: Young Families - Nature - Oak Trees - Garden Style
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall
What the scenery looks like: Live oak trees, native grasses, wooded trails, open fields, and beautiful natural textures.
Phil Hardberger Park is one of my favorite choices for families who want their photographs to feel natural and connected to the outdoors. The park encompasses hundreds of acres and includes miles of trails, restored savanna, wetlands, playgrounds, nature areas, and open spaces. The natural landscape gives us plenty of variety without having to turn your session into a long hike.
For family photography, I especially love the combination of tall grasses, mature trees, and open areas. It gives photographs that quintessential Texas feeling without looking overly rustic. This is also a wonderful option for families with toddlers because there is room to move. Instead of expecting a two-year-old to stand still and smile for an hour, we can let them walk, explore, run toward you, hold your hand, and interact with their family.
And honestly, those are often the photographs I love most.
For babies: The shade and wooded areas can make this a comfortable option, particularly during warmer months.
For large families: The variety of open spaces makes it easier to photograph everyone together while still creating smaller groupings and individual family moments.
If you love the look of natural, relaxed family photography, Phil Hardberger Park is one of the first locations I would consider.

2. King William District (131 King William Street, San Antonio, TX 78204)
Best For: Editorial Feel - Historic Architecture - Romance
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Historic homes, beautiful architecture, mature trees, sidewalks, gardens, and charming neighborhood streets.
Not every family session needs to happen in a field. King William gives your photographs an entirely different feeling. As one of San Antonio's designated historic districts, King William is known for its historic architecture and distinctive neighborhood character.
This is one of my favorite options for families who want something a little more refined and editorial. Think beautiful homes, porches, mature trees, sidewalks, and the texture of an old San Antonio neighborhood. It works especially well for families with older children who are comfortable walking and interacting together. It can also be beautiful for couples or a motherhood session.
For families with very young toddlers, I typically prefer locations with more room to roam, simply because sidewalks and neighborhood streets require a little more awareness.
But if your children are older and you love architecture, King William can create some of the most distinctive family photographs in San Antonio.
3. Brackenridge Park (3700 N. St. Mary’s Street, San Antonio, TX 78212)
Best For: Young Families - Water - Tall Trees - Classic San Antonio
Best Time: Early Morning or Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Mature trees, the San Antonio River, bridges, trails, historic structures, and gardens.
Brackenridge Park has a completely different personality from Phil Hardberger Park. Located along the San Antonio River, Brackenridge is one of San Antonio's most iconic parks. It offers tree-lined paths, river views, historic structures, gardens, walking trails, playgrounds, and plenty of opportunities for families to explore.
I love this location for families who want their photographs to feel distinctly San Antonio. There is something especially beautiful about photographs of children walking along the river or families tucked beneath the mature trees. It is also a great choice for extended families because there are plenty of places to spread out. We can photograph the entire group together and then create smaller combinations without the session feeling repetitive.
For families with toddlers, the environment gives us opportunities for movement and interaction. Rather than asking little ones to perform for the camera, we can make the session feel more like an adventure.
One thing to keep in mind is that Brackenridge is a popular public park, so it can feel busier than some of the quieter locations on this list.
But if you want beautiful family photographs with a strong sense of place, Brackenridge is hard to beat.
What your San Antonio Family Session can look like:
Every location looks a little different, but the goal is always the same: photographs that feel connected to this season of your motherhood, not simply photographs of you standing in a pretty place.
4. Landa Branch Library (233 Bushnell Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212)
Best For: Young Families - Historic Architecture - Garden Style
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Historic architecture, stone details, mature trees, manicured grounds, pathways, and an elegant estate-like setting
If you love the charm of King William but want something that feels a little quieter and more intimate, Landa Library is a beautiful option for family photos in San Antonio. The historic building and surrounding grounds give us a completely different look from San Antonio's more natural photography locations. Instead of tall grasses and sprawling trails, think beautiful architecture, mature trees, stonework, pathways, and an almost estate-like atmosphere.
I love this location for families who want photographs that feel timeless, polished, and still relaxed. It is especially beautiful when wardrobe is part of the vision for the session. Neutral tones, dresses, beautiful textures, and slightly more elevated family outfits complement the architecture incredibly well without requiring everyone to look overly coordinated. The grounds also allow us to create variety. We can use the architecture for more classic family portraits and then move into the greenery for photographs that feel softer and more playful.
For families with very active toddlers, I might recommend Phil Hardberger Park, Live Oak, or Cibolo instead, where there is more freedom to run and explore. But for a smaller family or children who are a little older, Landa Library can create a really beautiful, elevated family gallery.
If your vision for your family photographs feels less like polished grounds and timeless San Antonio architecture, I would put Landa Library near the top of your list.

5. Confluence Park (310 W Mitchell St, San Antonio, TX 78204)
Best For: Classic San Antonio - Modern Art - Riverwalk
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Striking modern architecture, native landscaping, river views, concrete textures, walking paths, and the surrounding Mission Reach landscape.
If you want family photos that feel unmistakably San Antonio without choosing a traditional historic location, Confluence Park is one of my favorite options. Located where San Pedro Creek meets the San Antonio River, the park combines the natural landscape with some of the most recognizable modern architecture in the city. The enormous concrete pavilion creates beautiful lines, interesting light, and a backdrop that feels completely different from San Antonio's grassy fields and wooded parks.
I especially love Confluence Park for families who want their photographs to feel a little more modern and editorial. We can use the architecture for more composed family portraits, then move toward the trails, native plants, and river for photographs that feel softer and more organic. That variety allows a single gallery to have several different looks without requiring us to drive between locations.
For very young toddlers, I may recommend one of the more open, nature-focused locations in this guide. For older children and families who enjoy walking and exploring together, however, Confluence Park can be an incredible choice.
It is also a great option if you love San Antonio and want the location of your family photos to reflect the city you call home.
6. Senator Frank Madla Natural Area (9780 Menchaca Road, San Antonio, TX 78245)
Best For: Young Families - Tall Grass/Wildflowers - Open Field - Surrounded by Hills
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Native prairie, wild cherry trees, wooded areas, trails, hills, and expansive Texas landscapes.
If you want your family photographs to feel like you stepped away from the city and into the Texas Hill Country, Senator Frank Madla Natural Area is worth considering. The natural area includes prairie paths, wild cherry patches, wooded areas, and a hilltop overlook with expansive views of the surrounding valley and hills.
I particularly love this location for families who want photographs that feel earthy and organic. The prairie provides beautiful movement and texture, while the wooded areas give us a completely different backdrop within the same session.
It can also be wonderful for children because there is something about being outside in a natural environment that makes interaction feel much more effortless.

7. Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne (140 City Park Road, Boerne, TX 78006)
Best For: Young Families - Tall Grass - Open Field - River Access
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Live oak and cypress trees, Cibolo Creek, prairie, wooded trails, wetlands, and natural Texas landscapes
If you are willing to drive outside San Antonio, Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne is one of my favorite choices for families who want something completely immersed in nature. The property encompasses more than 160 acres and includes multiple ecosystems, more than six miles of trails, Cibolo Creek, wetlands, prairie, and beautiful tree canopies.
Cooper's Crossing, where the trail crosses Cibolo Creek, is one of the most popular photo areas on the property. There is something very peaceful about photographing families here. Instead of feeling like you are at a traditional photo location, the session can feel like you are simply spending an evening outside together.
Children can explore. Parents can hold hands. We can walk along the trails, pause in the trees, and let the environment become part of the story.
Cibolo is especially beautiful for families who love the Hill Country aesthetic.
One important detail: The Cibolo requires a photo permit for professional photography, and the organization has announced that the single-session permit fee will increase from $25 to $40 beginning September 1, 2026. That permit is part of what helps preserve the property for future generations, and I am happy to handle those details when we choose Cibolo for your session.

Found a family location in San Antonio you love?
You don’t have to figure out the rest on your own. From choosing the right location to planning outfits and creating a relaxed experience in front of the camera, I’ll help you plan a maternity session that feels like you.
8. Live Oak Park (18001 Park Drive, Live Oak, TX 78233)
Best For: Young Families - Lakeside - Tall Trees
Best Time: Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Mature trees, open green spaces, water, trails, bridges, and plenty of room for children to explore.
For families with little kids, sometimes the best location is not the most dramatic one. It is the one where everyone can relax.
Live Oak's Main City Park is one of my favorite options for exactly that reason. The combination of mature trees, open spaces, water, and walking areas gives us plenty of variety while still feeling approachable for a family session. There is room for toddlers to move, siblings to play, and families to walk together without every moment needing to be carefully posed.
That makes it especially helpful for families who are already thinking, But what if my toddler doesn't cooperate? They do not need to!
At a location like this, we can let your children lead us a little. They can explore, run back to you, hold your hands, look for things along the path, or snuggle up when they need a break. Those interactions give us the opportunity to create the photographs that often end up meaning the most.
For babies, the mature trees also give us options for softer light and shaded areas. For larger families, the open spaces make it easier to arrange everyone together before breaking into smaller family groupings.
If you want your family photographs to feel easy, playful, natural, and focused on your relationships rather than the location itself, Live Oak is a wonderful option.

9. Landa Park in New Braunfels (164 Landa Park Drive, New Braunfels, TX 78130)
Best For: Young Families - Riverside - Bridges
Best Time: Morning or Evening/Golden Hour
Best Season: Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter
What the scenery looks like: Giant oak trees, walking paths, open green spaces, water, bridges, gardens, and the natural landscape surrounding the Comal River
Landa Park is another wonderful option if you are willing to travel outside San Antonio. Located in the heart of New Braunfels, Landa Park covers more than 50 acres and includes giant oak trees, walking trails, open spaces, playgrounds, an arboretum, and the spring-fed waters of the Comal River.
For family photography, the variety is one of the biggest advantages. We can create beautiful photographs beneath the trees, along walking paths, near the water, and in open areas.
It is also a particularly good choice for families with young children because there is so much for them to experience. Sometimes the best way to get genuine photographs of a toddler is to give them something interesting to do. Landa Park also has a very different feeling from the San Antonio locations on this list. It feels like a little getaway, which can make the entire session feel more like an experience.

Which San Antonio Family Photography Location Fits Your Family?
With so many beautiful places for family photos in San Antonio, I would not choose a location simply because you saw a beautiful photograph taken there.
Think about how you want your session to feel.
For a natural Texas setting with plenty of room for children to explore, consider Phil Hardberger Park, Senator Frank Madla Natural Area, Cibolo Nature Center, or Live Oak.
For something lush with trees and water, consider Brackenridge Park or Landa Park in New Braunfels.
If you are drawn to beautiful architecture and want something more timeless or editorial, King William Historic District or Landa Library may feel more like you.
And if you love modern architecture and want your photographs to have a strong sense of San Antonio, Confluence Park offers something completely different.
You do not have to figure this out before reaching out to me.
Not sure which location fits your family?
I help my families choose a location based on the ages of their children, the season, the light, their wardrobe, the scenery they are drawn to, and most importantly, how they want their photographs to feel.
What Time Should We Take Family Photos?
For most outdoor family sessions, I recommend scheduling around golden hour. This is the period shortly before sunset when the sun becomes softer and lower in the sky. The exact timing changes throughout the year, which is why I do not recommend choosing a session time based on a generic sunset chart alone.
The direction of the light, the amount of shade, the season, and the location all matter.
For families with young children, I also take bedtime into consideration. Sometimes an earlier morning session, if schedule allows, is much more enjoyable than asking a tired toddler to make it through an evening session.
The goal is not simply to find the prettiest light. The goal is to find the light and timing that allow your family to be themselves.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?
This might be the question I hear most often from parents. And my answer is always the same:
They don't have to.
Family photography does not need to look like everyone standing in a straight line and smiling at the camera. Some of my favorite photographs are the ones where a toddler is running toward Dad, a baby is being snuggled against Mom, siblings are laughing together, or everyone is simply walking hand in hand. I will guide you through the session so you are never wondering what to do with your hands or where everyone should stand.
But I also leave room for the unexpected. Because those little moments are often the ones you will care about most years from now.
Planning Your San Antonio Family Photography Session
Once we have chosen your location, we can start thinking about the rest of your session.
What should everyone wear?
How should we prepare young children?
Should we bring anything with us?
What happens if the weather changes?
These are all things I help you think through before your session.
Once you have a location in mind, the next step is usually deciding what everyone will wear. My guide to what to wear for family photos in San Antonio will help you build a cohesive wardrobe without making everyone look overly coordinated.
The goal is to make the entire experience feel simple and intentional, from the first email to the moment your finished artwork is hanging in your home.
Your Family Deserves More Than a Gallery of Digital Files
Choosing a location is only one small part of creating family photographs that you will still care about decades from now. When you book a family session with me, I want you to walk away with photographs that remind you of what this season of motherhood actually felt like.
The way your little one reached for your hand.
The way your children leaned into each other.
The way your baby fit against your chest.
The way your family laughed together when nobody was trying to smile for the camera.
That is why I believe family photography should be about more than simply getting a beautiful gallery. It should give you something tangible to keep.
My San Antonio family photography experience is designed around creating meaningful photographs and beautiful artwork for your home. If you are planning family photographs this year, I would love to help you choose the location that feels right for your family.
And if you already know you are ready to start planning, inquire about your family session here.
Your children will not be this age forever. Let's make photographs that give you a way to remember what this season felt like.
Frequently Asked Questions about Maternity Photography Locations in San Antonio
What is the best place for family photos in San Antonio?
There is no single best location for every family. Phil Hardberger Park is one of my favorite all-around choices because it offers natural scenery, shade, trails, open spaces, and room for children to move. Brackenridge Park is another excellent option for families wanting a more distinctly San Antonio setting.
What is the best location for family photos with toddlers?
For toddlers, I love locations that give children room to move and explore. Phil Hardberger Park, Brackenridge Park, and Senator Frank Madla Natural Area are all great options because we can incorporate movement and play into the session rather than expecting a toddler to sit still.
What is the best location for large family photos in San Antonio?
For extended families, I look for locations with plenty of space and a variety of backdrops. Brackenridge Park, Phil Hardberger Park, and Cibolo Nature Center can all work beautifully depending on the size of your group and the overall feel you want.
Can you help me choose a family photography location?
Absolutely. Location planning is part of my process. When you inquire, we can talk about your family, your children's ages, the style of photographs you love, and the overall feeling you want from your session. From there, I can recommend a location that makes sense for your family.
When should we book our San Antonio family photos?
I recommend booking as early as possible, particularly if you have a specific season, weekend, or sunset date in mind. Fall and the weeks leading into the holidays tend to be especially popular for family photography.
Do family photography locations require permits?
Some do, and requirements can change. For example, The Cibolo Conservation Center requires photography permits for professional sessions requires photo permits for photoshoots. New Braunfels has different rules for individual family sessions versus larger commercial photography operations.
I recommend checking current requirements before your session, and I help my clients navigate location logistics as part of the planning process.
