Fresh 48 Session at Methodist Hospital | San Antonio Fresh 48 Photographer

There is something especially tender about walking into a hospital room when a baby is barely a day old.

I had known these two for years before photographing their Fresh 48 session at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, which made meeting their little boy at only 30 hours old feel incredibly special. After experiencing miscarriage, this pregnancy had been filled with so much prayer and anticipation. They had waited, hoped, and imagined what it would finally feel like to meet their son.

Then he arrived quickly! His mama moved through an unmedicated labor as a first-time mother with so much strength that even the hospital staff were impressed. But by the time I arrived the following day, the intensity of birth had given way to something much quieter.

They were simply together, laughing with their family members, and beaming with pride and joy as they presented their first born son!

A brand-new baby tucked against his parents. Tiny stretches beneath a hospital blanket. Two people who had been a couple for years suddenly learning the face, movements, and sounds of their son.

As a San Antonio Fresh 48 photographer, these are the moments I want families to be able to return to long after the hospital bracelets are gone and their newborn no longer fits quite so perfectly against their chest.

Fresh 48 photography is very different from a traditional newborn session.

Nothing needs to be prepared before I arrive. There is no perfectly styled nursery to finish, no need to tidy your hospital room, and no expectation that your baby will sleep through the session.

These photographs are about remembering the beginning exactly as it was.

For this family, that beginning carried an especially deep sense of gratitude. They had already experienced the heartbreak of pregnancy loss before finding out they were expecting their son. When I arrived at Methodist Hospital, he had only been in the world for about 30 hours. Everything about him was still completely new.

His tiny expressions. The way he curled into his parents. The newborn skin and hospital blankets. The way his mom and dad kept looking down at him as though they still could not quite believe he was finally here.

Because I had known this couple long before they became parents, watching them with their son felt particularly meaningful. The kindness and affection I had always seen between the two of them had simply expanded.

Now there were three.

What a Fresh 48 Session Really Looks Like

  • Newborn baby resting in a hospital bassinet during a Fresh 48 session at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio

One of the questions expecting parents often have is what actually happens during a Fresh 48 session in San Antonio.

The answer is really simple! I arrive at your hospital, birth center, or home after you and your baby have had a little time to settle. From there, I photograph what is already unfolding.

You might feed your baby.

Dad might scoop him out of the bassinet.

You might sit together on the hospital bed and spend five minutes doing nothing except staring at the person you have spent months waiting to meet.

That is enough!

Fresh 48 sessions are intentionally relaxed because the first day after giving birth is not the time to perform for a camera. I guide you when you need direction, but I leave plenty of space for the quiet, unplanned moments that make the photographs feel like your family.

This mama had just experienced a swift, unmedicated birth. She did not need to do anything impressive for her photographs the following day. The session could simply be about meeting and getting to know her baby.

And years from now, that is likely what these photographs will remind her of most.

Not what the hospital room looked like.

Not whether everything was perfectly arranged.

But how impossibly tiny her baby boy was and what it felt like to hold him when he had only been hers for a few hours.

The First Photographs of a New Family

  • Parents sitting together with their newborn son during a natural Fresh 48 photography session

There is a particular expression I notice again and again when I photograph brand-new parents.

They look at their baby and then at each other. Almost as if they are silently saying, Can you believe this is our life now? That transition is one of my favorite parts of Fresh 48 photography.

The session is certainly about documenting your newborn, but it is also about documenting the first version of you as parents. For these two, becoming a family of three had been anticipated for a long time. And because they had already shared years of life together before welcoming their son, there was something especially sweet about seeing how naturally they moved into caring for him together.

A hand resting protectively along his back.

One parent watching while the other held him. The tiny exchanges happening between all three of them without anyone realizing I was photographing them. Those photographs are the ones I believe become more valuable with time.

Babies change so rapidly during the first few weeks that the newborn you bring home from the hospital already looks a little different by the time your traditional newborn session arrives. That is why some San Antonio families choose to document both!

A Fresh 48 session preserves the hospital room and the first hours.

An in-home or studio newborn session preserves the quieter early weeks once everyone has settled in at home.

Together, they tell two very different parts of the same story.

Planning Your Own Fresh 48 Session in San Antonio?

If you are expecting a baby at Methodist Hospital or another San Antonio-area hospital or birth center, a Fresh 48 session can be reserved before your due date.

Because babies rarely arrive according to schedule, I reserve your session around your estimated delivery window and finalize the exact date once your baby is here!

Should You Book Both Fresh 48 and Newborn Photos?

You do not have to choose one or the other.

For parents who know they want a fuller record of their baby’s first year, I especially love pairing a Fresh 48 session with newborn portraits after you are home. The photographs serve different purposes.

Your Fresh 48 gallery remembers the beginning: hospital bracelets, sleepy newborn stretches, your baby's first days, and the first time you held him in that particular season of life.

Your in-home newborn session gives us more time to document your family together once you have settled into a new rhythm.

Your baby's first hours are strangely vivid while you are living them and surprisingly difficult to remember later. There is so much happening at once!

You are recovering from birth. Learning how your baby likes to be held. Memorizing a face you have only just met. Looking at your partner and realizing that somehow, between yesterday and today, the two of you became someone's parents.

A Fresh 48 session gives those memories somewhere to live.

My approach to Fresh 48 photography in San Antonio is quiet, natural, and centered on connection. I will gently guide you when needed, but there is nothing you need to perform and very little you need to prepare.

If you are expecting at Methodist Hospital or another San Antonio-area hospital or birth center and want the first chapter of your baby's story preserved, you can inquire before your due date to reserve space around your delivery window.
