What to Expect During an In-Home Newborn Photography Session in San Antonio

Bringing a newborn photographer into your home can feel a little intimidating, especially when you're already tired, healing, and wondering whether your house is "ready" for photographs.

The good news? Your home doesn't need to be perfect, and your baby doesn't need to cooperate perfectly either.

An in-home newborn session is designed to meet your family where you are, in the quiet, messy, beautiful beginning of life with your baby. Lauren Kay's Photography designs relaxed in-home newborn photography sessions in San Antonio with all of that in mind.

Instead of packing a diaper bag, loading a tiny baby into the car, and arriving somewhere on time, the photographer comes to you. The goal is to create warm, natural photographs in the place where your new days together are beginning. Your home does not need to look like a magazine. Your baby does not need to “behave.” You do not need to know what to do.

Here is what the experience usually looks like from start to finish, and how to feel prepared without overthinking it.

Wondering if an in-home newborn session is right for your family?

I'll come to you, help you prepare, and guide you through a relaxed session centered around your baby and your family.

Table of Contents:

What exactly happens during an in-home newborn session?

01 | Start at home

I'll walk through your home with you and look for the rooms with the best natural light.

02 | Settle in

There's no need to rush. Baby can eat, be changed, cuddled, or rocked whenever needed.

03 | Photograph

We'll move naturally through your home, documenting parents, siblings, baby details, and the little interactions that make this season yours.

04 | No rush to finish

There isn't a strict expectation that baby needs to sleep for two hours or that everyone needs to behave perfectly.

This is a newborn session, not a performance.

Do I need to clean my house?

No, your house does not need to be spotless. Hear me on this one!

Please don't spend the morning of your newborn session deep cleaning your entire house.

We're not photographing your countertops.

We're photographing the bedroom where you fed your baby at 2 a.m., the nursery you spent months preparing, the couch where you'll spend countless afternoons together, and the little corners of your home that belong to this season.

Before I arrive:

  • Open curtains and blinds

  • Make the bed

  • Clear obvious clutter from bedside tables

  • Tidy the nursery

  • Put away bright packaging and laundry

  • Don't worry about the rest

In-Home Newborn Session Flow

Feeding, diaper changes, and soothing are part of the session.

Newborn sessions are not built around a strict timeline because newborns are not built around a strict timeline. I usually shoot in-home around an hour, up to an hour and a half. My goal is to work efficiently so you can get back to snuggling your baby.

Your baby may need to feed right after the session begins. They may need to be changed more than once. They may spit up, need rocking, want to be held, or take a while to settle. None of this derails the morning! It is expected.

What if my baby cries?

That's okay! Your baby doesn't need to sleep through the entire session.

They can eat, cry, stretch, stare at you, need a diaper change, or simply want to be held.

We work around your baby rather than trying to make your baby fit into our schedule.

What if baby needs to eat?

We let baby eat! No rush!

What if baby needs a diaper change?

Change the diaper, no biggie.

What if baby is wide awake?

We keep photographing, mama! Newborn photos with your baby awake are always so beautiful.

Lauren Kay's Photography in-home newborn sessions naturally include breaks for:

  • Nursing or bottle feeding

  • Burping

  • Diaper changes

  • Swaddling or unswaddling

  • Rocking and soothing

  • A few quiet minutes when the baby needs less stimulation

If you are nursing and prefer privacy, you can absolutely take it. If you are comfortable having feeding moments photographed, those can be beautiful too. The choice is yours.

If you use bottles, formula, pumping supplies, pacifiers, or a specific swaddle, keep them nearby. There is no need to hide the tools that are helping you care for your baby.

This is one reason in-home sessions can feel so much easier than studio sessions for many families. Everything you need is already there. The diapers are there. The extra onesie is there. Your water bottle, snacks, nursing pillow, and favorite chair are there too.

At LKP, my newborn sessions are about much more than the baby alone. In fact, solo portraits of your baby are a very small part of the overall session. You can expect the flow to follow your baby, if they want to be held most of the time by you or your partner that is very normal! I spend most of the session working with the whole family and when baby is content and falls asleep, we will transition slightly to solo baby portraits.

What to Expect for Parents

Parents are usually guided into simple positions that feel comfortable. You might sit on the bed holding the baby, stand near a window, cuddle on the couch, or look down at your newborn while I gently adjust or prompt you.

You do not need to know how to pose. You do not have to stare at the camera the whole time. Many of the most beautiful images are soft and connected, with parents simply holding, breathing, smiling, and taking in the baby.

If you are still recovering from birth, please be sure to share how you're feeling with me. You can sit for most of the session. You can take breaks. You can avoid positions that feel uncomfortable. The session should support your body, not ask too much of it.

What if I have an older child?

Toddlers don't have to sit still for an hour and smile at the camera. In fact, I don't want them to.

Older siblings bring their own energy to newborn sessions. They may be proud, curious, silly, unsure, or completely uninterested at first. All of that is normal! My approach is usually short and low pressure. I might start with sibling photos early, before attention fades. I may invite a toddler to sit beside the baby for just a few seconds, kiss the baby’s head, hold a tiny hand, or read a book nearby.

Breaks help. Snacks help. A beloved stuffed animal can help. So can letting siblings step away when they are done.

The goal is not to force perfect behavior. The goal is to capture connection in a way that feels safe and manageable.

Flexibility is what makes the session work.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL -

"I am so grateful to Lauren for capturing a beautiful glimpse into this chapter of my motherhood story. Our home session was nothing short of reality with a teething toddler who decided to forego her nap that day. Lauren was still able to effortlessly capture the silly, chaotic, sweet, and cuddly moments while providing my tired toddler with tons of grace and time! Her dedication to making us feel comfortable behind the camera while holding space for a natural flow around our home is so appreciated. It’s what makes our photos feel real and not overly staged. I will treasure these forever, and can’t wait to add to our collection of photos done by Lauren as our family grows."

Which rooms do we photograph in?

The primary bedroom

The bed is one of the most useful locations for newborn photography. It gives everyone a comfortable place to sit, cuddle, and interact naturally.

A neutral comforter or simple white sheet can create a soft backdrop, but it does not have to be fancy. If your bedroom gets nice window light, it may become the main setting for parent and baby portraits.

The nursery

If the nursery is ready, it can be a meaningful place to photograph. The crib, rocking chair, changing table, and small details all help tell the story of this moment.

If the nursery is not finished, that is okay! Many babies arrive before every shelf is styled and every picture is hung. Your session can still be beautiful without a complete room.

The living room

Living rooms are perfect for relaxed family images, especially if there is a couch near a window. This often works well when siblings are involved because they have space to move, sit, snuggle, and take a break.

A hallway or quiet corner

Sometimes the best light is not in the room you expected. I may notice a soft pocket of window light in a hallway, breakfast nook, or guest room. You do not have to identify these spots beforehand. That is part of what I'm looking for when I arrive.

Wherever the light is beautiful

This may be the most reassuring part of the whole process: your entire home will not be photographed. A newborn session usually uses two or three small areas. That means the whole house does not need to be cleaned. You do not need to host. You do not need to hide every sign that a baby lives there.

The biggest things I'm looking for:

Natural light

Window light is often the most important factor. Soft light from a bedroom, nursery, or living room window can create clean, gentle photographs.

Neutral spaces

Neutral bedding, simple walls, and soft textures can help keep the focus on the baby and family. That does not mean everything has to be beige or white. It simply means the background should not distract from the people.

Comfortable seating

A bed, couch, rocker, or chair gives parents a place to hold the baby naturally. Comfort matters, especially during postpartum recovery.

Meaningful details

A crib, swaddle, tiny socks, family heirloom, or rocking chair can add tenderness to the story. These details do not need to be styled perfectly.

Laundry baskets, burp cloths, bottles, pump parts, and delivery boxes can be moved into a closet, bathroom, or off-camera corner. No one expects a postpartum home to look untouched.

If you do not get to it all, that is fine. I'm used to working around the newborn bubble!

What should we wear?

The best preparation is simple. You are not trying to create a perfect day. You are making the morning a little easier for yourself.

A few days before the session, consider choosing outfits for everyone. Even better, have outfits planned before baby is born!

Soft neutrals, gentle textures, and comfortable fits usually photograph well. For postpartum comfort, choose something that feels good seated, standing, and holding the baby. Flowing dresses, soft knits, button-front tops, and simple loungewear can all work.

You don't need to figure out everyone's wardrobe alone. I provide styling guidance and Client Closet access, and I've created a complete guide to what to wear for in-home newborn photos.

When should we schedule?

Many families reserve their due date during the second or third trimester. Since babies rarely arrive exactly on "schedule", I'll book you out two weeks from your due date as a place on the calendar and confirm the actual session date after baby arrives.

How to prepare for an in-home newborn session

One of my favorite parts of the newborn experience happens before I ever arrive at your door.

You have enough to think about as you prepare to welcome your baby. Choosing what to wear, figuring out which rooms will photograph best, and wondering whether your home is "ready" for photographs shouldn't have to add to the list.

I'll help you plan the details ahead of time so you can walk into your session feeling prepared and confident.

Together, we'll talk through:

  • What to wear: I'll help you choose outfits that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and coordinate naturally as a family.

  • Your home: You don't need a picture-perfect house. I'll help you identify the spaces with the best light and let you know what, if anything, is worth tidying before I arrive.

  • Timing: We'll choose a time that works well for your family and gives us plenty of room to follow your baby's needs.

  • Your family: I'll learn about your children, your routines, and the little details that matter to you so your session feels personal rather than posed.

  • The overall feel: Whether you envision quiet, intimate photographs or lots of playful family connection, we'll talk about what you want to remember from this season.

You don't need to know how to pose or know exactly what you want your gallery to look like. That's my job!

Your job is simply to show up as you are, with your people, and let this season unfold.

What happens after our session?

After your newborn session, the photographs you've been waiting for don't simply disappear into a digital gallery. I'll carefully prepare your images and guide you through the process of deciding how you want to remember this season.

You'll receive a beautifully curated gallery of your family's photographs, with 55+ fully edited images included in your experience.

From there, we'll talk about the photographs that mean the most to you and the ways you may want to preserve them. Whether that's a beautiful album filled with the photographs you'll want to look through years from now or artwork displayed throughout your home, I'll help you choose pieces that fit your family and your space.

Because these photographs aren't meant to live forgotten on a hard drive.

They're meant to be part of your home.

Part of the story your children will grow up seeing.

And part of the tangible record of the little people they once were.

Why families choose in-home newborn photography

There is something uniquely meaningful about photographing your newborn at home. You don't have to pack everyone up.

No diaper bag full of everything you might possibly need. No trying to get a newborn dressed and out the door. No worrying about being late. You stay right where you're most comfortable.

Your baby gets to set the pace. If your baby needs to eat, we stop. If they need a diaper change, we pause. If they want to be held, we slow down. There is no expectation that your newborn needs to sleep through the session.

Your home becomes part of the story.

The nursery you spent months preparing. The bedroom where you spend those quiet early mornings. The couch where you'll feed, cuddle, and eventually watch your baby take their first steps.

These ordinary spaces won't always feel ordinary. One day, they'll be the places you wish you could remember exactly as they were.

And you get to be present.

You don't need to perform for the camera or know what to do with your hands. I'll gently guide you when needed and give you plenty of space to simply love your baby.

Because the most meaningful newborn photographs aren't always the perfectly posed ones. They're the photographs that bring you right back to how it felt to be there.

If the baby needs feeding or soothing, the session will pause and adjust for that. I've heard parents talk about how thankful they were to actually get to document their newborn while they were awake!

No! And please don't. You are freshly postpartum and I do NOT want you stressing about your home. Most sessions only use a few small areas with good light. Focus on the bedroom, nursery, or living room if you have the energy. Anything else can be moved out of the frame. I'm a professional and I am used to working around a postpartum bubble.

Choose comfortable clothing in soft colors or simple patterns. Neutrals, gentle earth tones, creams, whites, soft blues, and muted pastels often work well. Absolutely! I am a dog mama to a rowdy golden retriever and am absolutely open to having your pups involved as much or as little as you'd like.

Your home is part of your baby's story

One day, you won't remember exactly what your living room looked like.

But you may remember the way your newborn curled against your chest there.

You'll remember the nursery you prepared before you knew exactly who your baby would become.

You'll remember how tiny they were in your arms.

That's why I love in-home newborn photography.

We're not just documenting your baby.

We're documenting the beginning of your life together.
