You don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive, and you won't be choosing your final session date months in advance.
Instead, we'll use your due date as a guide, reserve space on my calendar around that window, and finalize the details once your baby is here.
Booking during pregnancy simply gives you one less thing to think about during those first sleepy weeks at home.

Why I recommend booking newborn photos during pregnancy
There isn't one magical week when every expecting mama has to book her photographer. But reserving your session during pregnancy gives you something incredibly valuable: time. Newborn photographers can only take a limited number of sessions around each due-date window.
Beginning your search during the second trimester gives you more time to find someone whose photographs and approach actually feel right for your family instead of choosing based solely on who happens to have an opening after your baby arrives.
You can make the decision before you're in the newborn haze.
The first few weeks with a new baby are full enough. You're recovering, feeding your baby, learning a completely new rhythm, sleeping whenever you can, and adjusting to life as a new family.
Choosing your photographer beforehand means this is already taken care of.

What is the ideal age for newborn photography?
For classic sleepy newborn portraits, the ideal age is often within the first 7 to 14 days after birth. During that window, many babies are still very sleepy and curled up from the womb, which can make those cozy swaddled images and gentle newborn poses easier. That early timing is helpful if you want the tiny details documented, like flaky newborn skin, curled fingers, fuzzy shoulders, and those sweet sleepy stretches.
That said, 7 to 14 days is a guide, not a rule carved into stone. I deeply desire to honor and respect your newborn bubble and healing. As a first time mom, I could not walk straight until a week after birth. Healing is so very important in those early weeks, and I do not want to rush you or cause unnecessary stress. Beautiful newborn photos can still happen after two weeks! Some babies are more alert. Some need extra feeding breaks. Some prefer to be wrapped. Some love being held. A skilled photographer will adjust the session to your baby rather than forcing a rigid plan.
If your baby is closer to three or four weeks old, the session may include more awake images, eye contact, wrapped poses, parent snuggles, and natural moments. That can be just as meaningful. The best newborn session is one where your baby is safe, comfortable, and cared for.
What if the baby arrives early?
If your baby arrives early, let your photographer know when you can. You don’t need to send a long message. Something simple like, “Baby is here! We arrived a little early and everyone is doing well. I’ll keep you posted when we know our discharge plan,” is plenty.
From there, your photographer can help decide the best time for your session. If baby is healthy and home soon, the session may still happen within that early newborn window. If baby needs extra care or you need more recovery time, the session can be adjusted.
Early arrivals are one of the reasons photographers schedule by due date rather than setting a hard appointment months in advance. Your photographer expects some babies to come before their due date. You are not throwing off the whole plan by having a baby who makes an early entrance.
If you booked maternity photos, it’s also helpful to keep your photographer updated if your doctor mentions a planned induction, scheduled C-section, or any signs that baby may arrive sooner than expected.
What if the baby arrives late?
Late arrivals are also completely normal! And to be expected! If your due date comes and goes with no baby, you don’t need to panic. Just send a quick update if you’d like, especially if your doctor has scheduled an induction or you have a new expected timeline.
Most photographers build wiggle room into their newborn calendar because late babies happen all the time. Once baby arrives, you’ll choose the session date from there. Even if your baby is born a week or more after the due date, you can usually still photograph them during that sweet early stage because the session timing is based on the birth date, not the original due date.
So if your baby arrives at 41 weeks, your newborn session is still planned around how many days old your baby is after birth. You haven’t “missed” the newborn window just because the due date passed.
What if there is a NICU stay?
A NICU stay changes the timeline, and that’s okay. If your baby needs time in the NICU, the priority is always your baby’s health and your family’s well-being. Photos can wait! Keep your photographer updated when you feel ready, but don’t feel pressure to manage photography logistics in the middle of a stressful medical season.
For babies who spend time in the NICU, newborn sessions are often scheduled after discharge or once the baby is medically cleared and stable. The “ideal age” guidelines become much more flexible in these situations.
Your photographer may ask:
When baby came home
Whether there are any handling or positioning considerations
Whether baby has medical equipment or feeding needs
Whether your pediatrician has given any specific guidance
What kind of session would feel most comfortable for your family
This is also where a gentle, baby-led approach matters so much. Some babies may need extra breaks. Some may not tolerate certain positions. Some may be older but still very tiny. The session should honor that. This post is only general information, not medical advice. For any concerns about your baby’s health, handling, or readiness for photos after a NICU stay, follow your medical team’s guidance first.
Why you don’t need to stress over an exact date
Newborn photography can feel like one more thing to get exactly right, especially when everyone is talking about the “perfect” window.
But here’s the truth: there is no single magic day.
Day 6 is not automatically better than day 10. Day 15 is not “too late” for meaningful photos. A baby who is awake for part of the session is not ruining anything! In fact, I love when newborns are awake to document their teeny little eyes that aren't open very long this early in their life. A baby who needs to eat three times during the session is just being a baby. The real goal is to photograph this tiny, brand-new stage in a way that feels calm and safe. The date matters because it helps guide the style of images we can usually create. Younger newborns tend to be sleepier and curlier. Older newborns may stretch more, look around more, and show more personality. Both are beautiful.

20 to 30 weeks: Reserve your photographer

By this point, many families know that newborn photographs are something they want, while still having plenty of time to plan the details before baby arrives.

30+ weeks: Reach out anyway
If you're reading this well into your third trimester and thinking, "I completely forgot about newborn photos," don't panic.
Twenty to thirty weeks is an ideal window, not a deadline.
My availability may be more limited closer to your due date, but I'd always rather you ask than assume you've missed your opportunity.

Why do newborn photographers book out in advance?
Newborn photographers book out early for a few practical reasons.
The first reason is time. A newborn session is not the same as a quick mini session. There’s communication before the session, planning, shooting, careful handling, editing, gallery delivery, and product support if the photographer offers albums or artwork.
The second reason is flexibility. Since babies arrive when they’re ready, photographers can’t pack newborn sessions back-to-back without leaving breathing room. If five babies are due the same week, some may arrive early, some may arrive late, and some may need more time after birth before photos happen. A thoughtful photographer plans for that.
The third reason is care. Newborn sessions are slower by nature. There are feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing, cuddling, and lots of pausing. The pace is baby-led, not clock-led.
Photographers also need to balance other types of sessions. In San Antonio, many photographers photograph families, maternity sessions, milestone sessions, and sometimes fresh 48 hospital sessions too. If they also offer sessions as a San Antonio fresh 48 photographer, their calendar has to stay flexible for babies who arrive with very little notice.
So when photographers say they book in advance, it’s not meant to create pressure. It’s because they’re protecting the quality of the experience for every family.
