What to Wear for In-Home Newborn Photos in San Antonio

If you're standing in front of your closet wondering what on earth you're supposed to wear for newborn photos a few weeks after having a baby, start here:
Choose something comfortable, soft, and simple that makes you feel like yourself.
For in-home newborn photographs, I generally recommend soft neutrals and muted colors, natural fabrics, subtle texture, and outfits that coordinate without matching exactly. Most importantly, choose pieces that allow you to comfortably sit, cuddle, feed, and move with your baby.
You don't need an entirely new wardrobe, and your family doesn't need to look perfectly styled.
The goal is to choose clothing that supports the photographs without distracting from the people in them.
Below, I'll walk you through exactly what I recommend for Mom, Dad, baby, and older siblings, plus the colors and fabrics that photograph beautifully inside your home.
The quick guide to what to wear for newborn photos
For Mom: Soft dresses, comfortable sets, flowing fabrics, or simple pieces that make you feel beautiful and allow you to move easily.
For Dad: Neutral chinos or pants with a simple knit, henley, button-down, or solid shirt.
For Baby: A simple onesie, knit romper, neutral swaddle, diaper, or bare baby.
For siblings: Soft, comfortable pieces that coordinate with the family without matching exactly.

What should Mom wear for newborn photos?
I always recommend choosing Mama's outfit first. You're the person who has just grown and delivered this baby. You're also likely the person wondering whether anything in your closet fits quite the way it used to.
So instead of building everyone's outfits around the baby, start with something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful right now. I love pieces with softness and movement for in-home newborn sessions. A long dress, an easy matching set, a soft knit, or even a simple tank paired with comfortable pants can all photograph beautifully. Look for fabrics that feel good against your skin and allow you to sit on the bed, curl up on the couch, stand beside a nursery window, and hold your baby without constantly adjusting yourself.
Most importantly, don't choose something simply because you think it will make you look "smaller." I want you to be able to look at these photographs years from now and recognize yourself in them.
The woman who just brought this baby into the world deserves to exist in the photographs, too.

Dressing your postpartum body for newborn photos
You don't have to dress the body you had before pregnancy. Your body has just carried your baby through an enormous transformation, and you may still be getting acquainted with this version of yourself.
Choose clothing for the body you're in today.
For some mamas, that means a long, flowing dress. For others, it's a soft pair of pants with a fitted tank, an oversized button-down, or something simple and intimate at home. There isn't one "right" postpartum outfit. We'll look for pieces that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and allow you to hold your baby without thinking about your clothing every few minutes.

What should Dad or your partner wear?
Once Mama's outfit is chosen, building Dad's outfit is usually much easier. The goal is to complement your outfit without matching it exactly. Simple pieces tend to photograph beautifully at home: chinos, neutral pants, linen or cotton button-downs, soft knits, henleys, and solid shirts.
For example, if you're wearing a cream dress, Dad might wear tan pants with a soft blue button-down.
If you're wearing muted blue, he could wear warm beige or cream.
And if your session has a particularly relaxed feel, barefoot is completely appropriate at home.
I generally recommend avoiding large logos, athletic clothing, very bold patterns, and shirts with tiny repetitive patterns that can become distracting in photographs.

What should your newborn wear?
Your newborn doesn't need an elaborate outfit. In fact, some of my favorite newborn photographs are often the simplest.
A cream or white onesie, a soft knit romper, a neutral swaddle, a diaper, or simply baby's bare skin can all keep the attention exactly where it belongs: on your baby.
I generally avoid clothing with large graphics, bright colors, complicated accessories, or anything that overwhelms their tiny features.
We'll often use more than one look throughout the session anyway. Your baby might begin in a simple outfit, spend part of the session wrapped in a swaddle, and eventually end up in nothing but a diaper while we photograph those tiny newborn details.

What should older siblings wear for newborn photos?
For older siblings, comfort matters almost as much as color. Toddlers should be able to climb onto the bed, sit beside you, cuddle their new sibling, and move around without being told repeatedly to protect their outfit.
For little girls, I love simple dresses, soft knits, bloomers, rompers, and subtle texture.
For little boys, overalls, linen pants, henleys, knits, and simple solid shirts work beautifully.
Use Mama's outfit as the starting point, then pull one or two colors from the overall palette into your older child's clothing. They don't need to match their new sibling. They just need to look like they belong to the same family.

When we're photographing inside your home, I generally recommend building your family's wardrobe around three colors:
One dominant color + one supporting neutral + one subtle accent
This gives the photographs enough variety to feel natural without making everyone's clothing compete for attention.
Warm + timeless
Cream + oatmeal + soft brown
Light + airy
Ivory + soft blue + warm beige
Soft + feminine
Cream + dusty rose + muted brown
Cozy + understated
Oatmeal + muted blue + warm ivory
A little more color
Cream + soft blue + muted golden yellow
You don't have to make your entire home coordinate with your clothing.
But I do like to consider the colors already present in the rooms we'll use so that your clothing feels harmonious with the environment rather than completely disconnected from it.

Fabrics and textures that photograph beautifully
Texture is one of the easiest ways to make a simple wardrobe feel intentional.
I especially love:
Linen
Cotton
Gauze
Soft knits
Muslin
Subtle ribbing
Gentle embroidery
Flowing fabrics
You don't need every person wearing a different texture.
A little variation is enough.
For example, Mama might wear a flowing cotton dress while Dad wears a linen shirt and baby is wrapped in a soft knit blanket.
The colors can remain simple while the textures give the photographs depth.

What should you avoid wearing for newborn photos?
There aren't many absolute rules, but a few things tend to distract from the soft, connected feeling we're trying to create.
I generally recommend avoiding:
Neon or extremely bright colors
Large logos or graphics
Very busy patterns
Everyone wearing exactly the same color
Tiny repetitive patterns
Stiff or uncomfortable clothing
Anything you know you'll constantly pull, tug, or adjust
My simplest rule is this:
If you don't feel comfortable in it before your session, you probably won't suddenly feel comfortable in it once a camera is pointed at you.
Choose the outfit you can forget about once your baby is in your arms.
You don't have to find the perfect outfit yourself.

What should I have ready on session day?
The night before your newborn session, set everyone's clothing aside in one place. For baby, you may want to have a simple outfit, swaddle, and backup nearby. For toddlers, having one backup outfit isn't a bad idea either.
Then stop. You don't need five outfit changes or an entire suitcase of options.

What color should Mom wear for newborn photos?
Soft neutrals and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully during in-home newborn sessions. Cream, ivory, oatmeal, soft blue, dusty rose, warm beige, and subtle earthy tones are some of my favorites.
But I don't believe every mama needs to wear a flowing cream dress for her newborn photographs.
Start with a color you genuinely feel beautiful in, then build the rest of your family's wardrobe around it. The goal is for your clothing to complement the photographs without making you feel like you're dressed as someone else.
Can I wear black for San Antonio in-home newborn photos?
Absolutely.
While I often recommend lighter neutrals and muted colors for the soft style of my in-home newborn work, black can photograph beautifully, especially if it feels more like you.
If you choose black or another darker color, we can balance the rest of your family's wardrobe with softer tones and consider how the color will work with the light and surroundings in your home.
I'd rather photograph you in something you feel wonderful wearing than put you in a color simply because it's traditionally considered "best" for newborn photos.
If you love darker colors, try charcoal, cocoa, deep olive, or soft navy. These still add depth without pulling too much attention.
Should everyone wear white for newborn photos?
No. In fact, I usually prefer families to coordinate rather than have everyone wear the exact same color.
If Mama is wearing cream, Dad might wear soft blue and tan while an older sibling wears oatmeal or a subtle muted color. This creates enough variation to make your photographs feel natural while still keeping everything cohesive.
Think "belonging together," not "matching."
Should siblings match for newborn photos?
Siblings don't need to match each other or the baby exactly.
Instead, choose clothing from the same overall color palette. If your family's wardrobe includes cream, soft blue, and warm beige, your older child might wear one or two of those colors in a simple dress, romper, knit, or pair of overalls.
Most importantly, choose something comfortable enough for them to move, climb, cuddle, and be themselves.
