When to Take Maternity Photos in San Antonio for Timeless Beautiful Memories: Tips from a San Antonio Maternity Photographer

  • 12 min read

The sweetest window for maternity photos is usually earlier than many people think. As a San Antonio Maternity Photographer, I often recommend planning your session for 28 to 34 weeks, when your bump has a beautiful shape, movement still feels manageable, and there is usually enough time before baby’s arrival to avoid feeling rushed.

That said, pregnancy does not follow a perfect calendar. Some mamas feel radiant at 31 weeks. Others feel more comfortable at 27 weeks, especially if she is carrying multiples, has a physically demanding pregnancy, or already know baby may arrive early. The goal is not to hit a magic number. The goal is to create portraits that feel like this season, while you still feel like yourself.

Maternity photography should feel calm, intentional, and deeply personal. It is one of the few times in life when everything is changing, but you can pause long enough to see the beauty in it.

Planning your San Antonio Maternity Session?

If you’re somewhere in your second trimester, this is the perfect time to start planning your session. I’ll help you choose the location, wardrobe, timing, and overall feel so you don’t have to figure it all out yourself.

When should you take maternity photos?

Most moms: 30–32 weeks

First pregnancy: often 30–32 weeks

Later pregnancies: often 28–30 weeks

Multiples / possible early delivery: consider earlier

There isn’t a magic week that works for every mama. Your comfort, pregnancy, and baby’s anticipated arrival all matter.

Not sure when you should schedule yours? That’s exactly what I’ll help you figure out.

When to Book your San Antonio Maternity Photographer

I recommend booking your maternity photographer during your second trimester, ideally once you are feeling settled enough to think through dates and vision. For many families, that means reaching out around 16 to 24 weeks.

This gives you the best chance of getting on your photographer’s calendar, especially if you want a weekend date, a popular outdoor location, or a busy season in San Antonio. Spring and fall can book quickly because the weather is more comfortable and the light is beautiful.

Here is a simple planning rhythm that works well:

Pregnancy stage

What to plan

16 to 24 weeks

Choose and book your photographer

24 to 28 weeks

Select your location, wardrobe, and styling details

28 to 34 weeks

Photograph your maternity session

Second or third trimester

Reserve newborn photography if you want a newborn session

If you’re reading this between 16 and 24 weeks, you’re right on time!

Ready to start planning?

Booking early also gives you space to choose intentionally. The photographer you choose will step into a tender season with you. That choice should feel personal. Look for someone whose work makes you feel something. Notice the light, posing, editing style, emotion, and overall mood. Do you love soft and organic images? More editorial portraits? A natural, family-centered approach? A refined studio feel? The best choice is the person whose photographic style you resonate with most, and whose presence feels like someone you would want to invite into this season.

What happens after your maternity session?

Your photographs don’t have to live on your phone.

After your gallery is delivered, I’ll help you choose the images that feel most meaningful and decide how you’d like to preserve them, whether that’s an heirloom album, framed artwork, or a collection that brings your maternity and newborn photographs together.

For most pregnancies, the 28 to 34 week window is the ideal time for maternity photos. By this point, your bump is typically defined enough to photograph beautifully, but you are not so far along that standing, walking, sitting, or changing outfits feels overwhelming.

This timing tends to work well because:

  • Your belly has a soft, rounded shape that photographs naturally.

  • You may still have enough energy for a relaxed session.

  • There is a lower risk of missing the session because baby arrives earlier than expected.

  • You have time to plan wardrobe, hair, makeup, location, and artwork without rushing.

  • Outdoor sessions feel more comfortable when we can move at an easy pace.

As a san antonio maternity photographer, I never treat this window as a strict rule. It is a helpful guide, not a requirement. Some of my favorite maternity portraits have happened outside that range because the timing was right for that mother, that pregnancy, and her story.

If this is a first pregnancy and you are feeling well, 30 to 32 weeks can be beautiful. If this is a later pregnancy, your bump may show earlier, and you may be ready closer to 28 or 29 weeks. If you are carrying twins or have a known chance of early delivery, it can be wise to plan even earlier.

Why this timeframe works so well for beautiful, comfortable portraits.

Maternity portraits are not just about documenting the size of your bump. They are about your miraculous body, your anticipation, your connection your partner, and the quiet shift before baby is in your arms.

Between 28 and 34 weeks, there is a lovely balance between visible transformation and physical ease. You can breathe, move, sit, laugh, snuggle your partner, hold your child, or walk through golden light without the entire session feeling like a feat of endurance.

Comfort matters because it shows in your photographs. When your shoulders soften, your hands rest naturally, and your expression feels peaceful, the final images carry that feeling.

I also love this window because it gives us room for artistry. We can choose a location that fits the mood of your home and your family. We can plan dresses, textures, heirloom pieces, and meaningful details. We can think beyond “getting a few photos” and create images that belong in an album, on your walls, and in your family story.

Your session isn’t about checking “maternity photos” off your to-do list. It’s about creating photographs that feel like this version of your family, and that you’ll still want to hold onto years from now.

A large bump is not required for stunning maternity photos.

One concern I hear often is, “What if I do not look pregnant enough yet?”

The truth is, you do not need the largest possible bump to have breathtaking maternity portraits. A smaller bump can photograph beautifully with the right wardrobe, posing, light, and direction. Maternity photography is not about proving how far along you are. It is about honoring this version of you.

Some of the most elegant, emotional maternity images are quiet and subtle. A hand resting on the curve of your belly. A soft profile in window light. The way fabric moves in the wind. The way your partner looks at you. The way your older child leans into you, already becoming a big sibling.

The right photographer will know how to create shape and softness without forcing anything. That matters far more than waiting until you feel “big enough.”

When to put the maternity session date on the calendar

Once your photographer is booked, I suggest choosing a session date within that 28 to 34 week range. If possible, avoid waiting until the final few weeks before your due date!

There are several reasons for this. Late pregnancy can bring swelling, fatigue, back pain, sleep changes, and general discomfort. Some days feel wonderful, and some days feel like your body has other plans. Scheduling earlier gives you a better chance of feeling comfortable and relaxed.

It also protects you from the unexpected. Babies arrive on their own timelines. If you wait until 37 or 38 weeks and baby comes early, your maternity session may not happen at all. Planning for 30 or 31 weeks gives you more breathing room.

For families with a high-risk pregnancy, multiples, a history of early delivery, or a planned induction or C-section, I would lean earlier. In those cases, 26 to 30 weeks may be a better fit. Your medical provider is the best person to advise you on activity and timing, and this guidance is informational only.

Already past 34 weeks?

Don’t count yourself out.

If you’re feeling well, we can still create beautiful maternity portraits. I’ll simply plan the session around your comfort—with an easy-access location, minimal walking, flexible pacing, or an indoor studio session.

A later session can still be beautiful, especially if you are feeling well and we plan thoughtfully. I would likely recommend a shorter session, an easy-access location, minimal walking, and a wardrobe that feels effortless. In this case, a studio portrait session may be a great option!

Sometimes the most meaningful portraits happen when you decide to stop waiting for perfect timing and simply honor where you are.

The best time of day for outdoor maternity photos in San Antonio

San Antonio light can be absolutely stunning, but timing matters. For outdoor maternity photography San Antonio sessions, I usually recommend shooting during golden hour, which is the soft window shortly after sunrise or before sunset.

This is when the light feels warm, flattering, and gentle. It creates dimension without harsh shadows, and it is especially beautiful for lifestyle maternity photos with movement, connection, and soft natural scenery.

Sunrise sessions feel quiet and peaceful.

Sunrise can be a wonderful choice, especially in warmer months. The air is usually cooler, locations are often quieter, and the light has a soft, delicate quality.

This can be a lovely fit if you want:

  • A calm session with fewer people around

  • Cooler temperatures in late spring, summer, or early fall

  • A softer, more private feeling

  • A smoother experience with young children who wake early

The main tradeoff is the early alarm and your photographer's availability. But for many families, the comfort and privacy are worth it.

Sunset sessions feel warm and romantic.

Sunset is the classic choice for glowing maternity portraits. The light is rich, flattering, and warm. It works beautifully in fields, gardens, historic spaces, and open areas where the sun can filter through trees or architecture.

This is often the best fit if you want:

  • Warm, golden images

  • A relaxed evening pace

  • Romantic portraits with your partner

  • A location with open sky or beautiful backlight

In summer, sunset sessions start later, so that is something to think through if young children will be included. In cooler months, sunset happens earlier and can be easier for family schedules.

What to do if the weather changes.

San Antonio weather can be unpredictable. A forecast can shift quickly, especially during stormy seasons or stretches of intense heat. I never want a maternity session to feel stressful because of weather, so I like having a plan before we need one.

If the weather does not cooperate, we usually have a few good options.

We can reschedule when possible.

If rain, heavy wind, or extreme heat would affect the experience and final images, rescheduling is often the best choice. This is another reason I prefer not to plan maternity photos too close to your due date. A little buffer gives us more flexibility.

We can move the session indoors.

Studio or in-home maternity photos can be incredibly intimate and timeless. A studio or your home can create a softer and more personal feeling.

This can be especially beautiful if:

  • You want a calm, private environment

  • You are sensitive to heat

  • Walking long distances feels uncomfortable

  • You love a more editorial or fine art look

  • You want portraits that feel connected to home and family life

Indoor light can be just as beautiful as outdoor light when used well. It creates quiet images with texture, shadow, and emotion.

We can adjust the timing.

Sometimes we do not need to change the date. We may only need to move the session earlier or later to avoid the harshest heat, strong wind, or passing rain.

This is where working with an experienced photographer makes a difference. Location, light, weather, wardrobe, and comfort all work together. A good plan leaves room to be flexible.

How to prepare for your maternity photos so your session feels easy

The best maternity sessions feel thoughtful, and true to your story. A little planning goes a long way.

Start with the feeling you want your images to carry. Soft and quiet. Romantic and refined. Natural and playful. Elegant and artful. Once we know the feeling, the rest becomes simpler.

Wardrobe is one of the biggest pieces of that plan. Fabrics, movement, color, and fit all affect how the final images look. Dresses with soft movement often photograph beautifully, and fitted pieces can be lovely when you want to highlight the curve of your belly. Neutrals, muted tones, and gentle textures tend to feel timeless, especially when the goal is artwork for your home.

If you are still deciding what to wear, my post on what to wear for maternity photos is a helpful place to begin.

A few simple tips I love:

  • Choose clothing that lets you sit, walk, and breathe comfortably.

  • Try everything on before session day.

  • Bring supportive shoes if we will walk to a location, even if you change once we arrive.

  • Keep jewelry meaningful and simple.

  • Plan snacks and water, especially for warm weather.

  • Let your photographer know if you need extra breaks or have movement limits.

Nothing about your session should feel like a performance. I will guide posing, hands, movement, and small adjustments so you never have to wonder what to do.

You don’t have to know how to pose.

One of the biggest things I hear from moms is:

“I’m so awkward in front of the camera.”

You don’t need to know what to do with your hands, how to stand, or how to pose.

I’ll gently guide you throughout the session while leaving room for the natural moments between you and the people you love.

Planning for maternity & newborn photos portraits?

Maternity

28–34 weeks

Newborn

First days/weeks after baby arrives

Heirloom Artwork

One story. Preserved together.

For families who want to document more than one chapter, LKP Portrait Collections pair multiple portrait sessions with heirloom artwork.

Maternity and newborn photography often belong in the same planning season. If newborn portraits matter to you, the best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second or third trimester.

Newborn photographers often reserve due dates rather than exact dates, then finalize the session after baby arrives. Booking ahead means you are not trying to research photographers while recovering, feeding, healing, and learning your baby’s rhythms.

If you want both maternity and newborn portraits to feel cohesive, think about them together. The same tones, textures, and level of softness can carry through from pregnancy into baby’s first days. That creates a beautiful story in an album or wall gallery.

You can read more in my guide to booking a newborn photographer if you are starting to plan that part of the experience.

Not necessarily. If you are feeling well, 35 weeks can still be beautiful. I would usually plan a gentle session with minimal walking, a comfortable location, and flexible pacing.

This is one reason I recommend scheduling maternity photos around 28 to 34 weeks instead of waiting until the last month. If you have a higher chance of early delivery, it may be best to schedule closer to 26 to 30 weeks. If baby still arrives before our portrait session, we can reschedule your session to a milestone session during your baby's first year.

You don’t need to feel completely comfortable in your changing body to deserve beautiful photographs of it. My approach is gentle and guided, with posing, wardrobe, light, and movement chosen to help you feel confident without asking you to become someone you’re not. Some of my favorite images are the quiet ones—the ones that simply show a mother as she is, right in the middle of becoming.

No. A large bump is not required for stunning images. Thoughtful styling, posing, light, and emotion matter more than size. Your photos should reflect your season, not a specific measurement.

Both are beautiful! Outdoor sessions offer golden light and natural scenery, while indoor sessions feel private, calm, and intimate. The best choice depends on your comfort, the weather, and the style of images you love most.

The second or third trimester is ideal. That gives you time to choose the right photographer and reserve space before baby arrives.
