How to Play with & Feed My 6 Month Old Baby

Playing with a 6 Month Old Baby, Baby Toys for 6 Months Old
Now keep in mind, baby's grow & develop at radically different rates! What my baby was doing at 6 months may be a bit ahead or a bit behind where your baby is right now.
6 months quickly turned into my favorite month of motherhood. Now don't get me wrong I loved the newborn days!! Give me all the cozy days in bed with my sleeping & nursing baby, with my husband home spending time with and caring for us. It was a golden dream! My next favorite season of motherhood without a doubt has been 6 months! My baby is just so active and playful, his personality is in full swing and he's the best baby in the world (every mom thinks this, right?? lol). We genuinely think he is so cool & feel so lucky we get to be friends with him for his whole life. Here are the big milestones he hit between months 6 & 7!
Started army crawling & by month 7 was very mobile with bear crawling!
Biiiigggg food guy! We gently started solids at 5 months, which I'll share more in the next section!
Fully sitting up & able to support himself to play with toys upright
We flew for the first time together!
Now that you've gotten the spark notes of what my baby was up to in month 6 & 7, here's a round up of our favorite things to play with!

I'm a big believer in independent play, although I know some baby's just won't hang with that. As my boy has gotten a bit bigger, he wants to do everything with me! It's sweet & also sometimes tiring. Lot's of these toys I'm able to set up around me and rattle around to get his attention then let him do his thing. Another big "toy" that he's loved & hasn't grown tired of yet is books! He loves to look through at the colors, but especially loves touch & feel books. My favorite ones are the Usborne books, here's the one we have! I also just bought this one, just because it was irresistible.
Feeding a 6 Month Old Baby
If you go to a pediatrician or child care provider, I would absolutely ask them any questions you have about food! I'm sharing what has worked for us & what I believe to be the best for my baby, but each mama has her own intuition and also may be reading different resources than me! I really don't think there's any one way to raise a baby, and we're all doing our best. I also love to hear what other moms are doing & take what I want then leave the rest. I encourage you to do the same! The main resource I use for navigating all the questions that come with bringing up a baby in the most wholistic way possible is this book, The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care. The author follows the principles of the Weston A. Price Foundation, which is an incredible place to start if you're new to eating whole, nourishing foods and are looking to learn more. I didn't know hardly anything about when, what, and how to start feeding my baby and have trusted this book with so many decisions! It even dives in to why Baby Led Weaning may not be the best choice for feeding your child, (controversial, i know). If you're intrigued by that, the main point is that BLW may be encouraging picky-eaters by allowing them to eat what tastes good to them rather than mom & dad being the authority of what is good & nourishing for them to be supporting their body with. Interesting thought right?!
We chose to start with home-made baby food made from real, whole ingredients that I pureed or mashed up in my kitchen. I love that I know & see exactly what is going into his body, plus it saves us loads of money not buying the pre-made baby foods full of who knows what at the grocery. It was a lot of work at first, full transparency, But at a certain point, it just becomes normal and fits into your routine! I like to prep his food, store enough for the next few days in the fridge, then freeze the rest in cubes for easy portioning. I pretty closely follow the guidelines set out in the book, so if you need another reason to buy it, here you go. :)
I'll start with a couple things I bought to start making and storing my baby's food at home:
Early on, at 5 months, we started Ezra with a soft boiled egg yolk, no egg white! The egg white is the part of an egg that may cause irritation in the gut and lead to an egg allergy. I pour a desiccated beef liver capsule that I take as a supplement into his egg yolk with a tiny pinch of a good salt (we use this one). This is a super food breakfast for him that he still eats now with a bit of ground beef and yogurt with mashed banana or mango. His very first food was kerrygold butter at 4.5 months & we also started supplementing Cod Liver Oil at that time too! Be selective with the brand you buy this from because they are NOT all created equal! It's important that the oil is processed in the US as many of the other brands come from Europe and are heavily processed at high temperatures, which depletes the minerals basically rendering the supplement useless.
Here's a few other ideas for making baby food at home that we have on rotation!
any protein we're eating that week, save a portion without much seasoning (if any beside salt) to puree for the next week. add in a good quality organic bone broth to soften it up
roasted sweet potatoes (400 degrees F for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) & mix loads of butter in
roasted butternut squash, same as sweet potatoes, mix in butter or coconut oil when pureeing
sautéed squash in coconut oil & salt
whole milk yogurt, the Chobani brand is the best I've found at my grocery for protein & fat content!
Mashed bananas or avocado with a little salt on top
Frozen mango in a push pop feeder (GREAT for teething babies!!)
We don't do any raw berries or fruits high in pectin since it can be harsh on the gut, but steamed & made into a little jelly would be a great option as well!
Feeding can be so simple & intuitive!! I'm so thankful for the resources I've had to encourage me in this. I feel very equipped & empowered in the food choices we've made, which is all a mama can ask for!

6 Months Into Motherhood Reflections
I've never had a more sanctifying experience than mothering my son. I'm learning motherhood is all about softening to the lessons I'm learning every day, and gaining a deeper appreciation of the Father's love and patience for us. Here are the main things I've learned so far and have reflections on!
My experience is different than every mom out there, but that does not need to be an isolating thing.
I'm very sensitive to the fact that we each have our very own and very different mothering experiences. We are truly doing what we believe to be best for our babies and that is all we need to be doing. I want to encourage you to stay away from comparison and especially any mom guilt about doing or not doing what other moms are doing!
Going outside is better for everyone!
Nothing calms a fussy baby like fresh air, tree branches swaying overhead in the wind, and watching the clouds pass by. Also, nothing regulates mama like getting your feet in the dirt (or grass) and taking a few deep breaths. It's nature's medicine. :)
Find friends with babies to spend the days with. I'm convinced babies do better with other babies.
This one has been HUGE. Finding mom friends, especially years ahead of me, that I can look up to or just be encouraged that what I'm going through is normal. Moms have a way of just figuring things out and making it work. It's helpful to see and learn that from other moms who've been down the same road you're on!
Find a routine that works for your family, but don't be married to it.
We have a mostly consistent nap & feeding routine for the day, which I'm convinced helps little man with napping & eating consistently. But some days call for getting out of the house and winging it. I think this is good for both of us, a little change of scenerey can do wonders and help break up the week! I'm also a huge believer in establishing the daily routines though. It's healthy for a baby to have a predictable atmosphere and know what to expect through their days, just as much as its healthy for them to be able to adapt to a changing schedule.
Share the load with your husband.
As much as he will, invite him in to co-parent with you. Switch off on bedtimes, pump so he can feed baby a bottle too, let him find something special that he gets to share with your baby. As moms, so many of the normal caretaking things fall on us, and it can become a lot to bear! Not to mention the mental load a mom carries. My husband usually is the one to give our baby a bath at the end of the day if he needs it after dinner. I make sure he's fed when it's time for bed, and we both tackle bedtime together with the routine we have in place. Once the baby is fed, my husband rocks him to sleep and lays him in his crib. Finding ways to share the load when he gets home from work has been everything to me. Sometimes it gets a lot to wear on my shoulders to be a primary caretaker, and sharing the responsibilities helps ease those feelings.
Make a habit to pray throughout your day.
I have this one listed last, but it's most important. Nothing can change my heart posture the way the spirit of Jesus can. He is the refiner and softener of my heart. He's the one who advocates for me and all my sinful thoughts to the Father, and trust me it happens a lot. I'm selfish and nothing reveals that to me more than caring for my baby, as hard as it is to admit. Praying throughout the day trains my mind to be thinking of heavenly things (Colo 3:2). It's especially helpful to be able to quickly start praying out of habit in hard moments, when I might usually spiral into frustration or anger.
