There is something especially sweet about photographing first-time parents in the place where they are beginning to figure out life with their new baby.
For this Medical Center in-home newborn photography session in San Antonio, I spent the morning with two brand-new parents and their baby boy in their apartment near the Medical Center.
Both Mom and Dad work in the Medical Center, so when they reached out about newborn photographs, documenting this season right at home felt like such a natural fit.
In-home newborn photography does not require a perfectly decorated nursery or a magazine-worthy house. Your home is valuable because it is where these first days are actually happening.
It is where you are learning your baby's little sounds. Where you are feeding him, holding him, and figuring out a completely new rhythm together. And especially as first-time parents, there is something meaningful about having photographs that preserve not just how tiny your baby was, but what these earliest days as a family actually felt like.

The first few weeks with your first baby can feel like their own little world.
There is nowhere you necessarily need to go. Most days revolve around feeding, sleeping, holding your baby, and slowly learning who this new little person is.
That is exactly why I love in-home newborn photography.
For this session, we did not need to turn their apartment into a photography studio or make their home look like something it was not.
We simply looked for beautiful light and photographed them together.
Your home does not have to be perfectly decorated before your newborn session. It does not need to be large. And you absolutely do not need every room to be photo-ready.
Sometimes one or two spaces with beautiful window light are all we need to create a complete newborn gallery.
More importantly, photographing your baby at home allows the photographs to hold a little more of the story of those first weeks.

One of the biggest advantages of an in-home newborn session is how little you have to do once I arrive.
Especially with your first baby, getting everyone dressed and out of the house can suddenly feel like a much bigger undertaking than it did a few weeks earlier.
For an in-home session, you do not have to pack the diaper bag, load a newborn into the car, or worry about whether your baby will need to eat the second you arrive somewhere.
Everything you need is already nearby.
If your baby needs to eat, we stop.
If they need to be changed, we change them.
If they want to stay curled up against Mom for a while, that can become part of the photographs too.
I do not expect newborns to follow a photography schedule.
Instead, I work around your baby's needs so the session can stay relaxed and the photographs still feel natural.
Photographing the Beginning of Parenthood
Although your newborn is obviously an important part of the session, I do not want your gallery to be made up only of photographs of your baby.
Becoming parents is part of the story too.
There is something particularly meaningful about photographing a couple with their first child because everything is new.
The way you look at your baby.
The way Dad holds him.
The way Mom instinctively settles him against her chest.
The way the two of you look at each other while holding the little person who suddenly made you parents.
Those are details you may not notice while you are living through the newborn haze.
But years from now, they can become some of the photographs you value most.
Newborn photography is not only about remembering how tiny your baby's fingers and toes were.
It is also about remembering who you were when they were that tiny.

One concern I hear from families is that their home is not "good enough" for newborn photographs.

But the size of your home has very little to do with whether we can create beautiful photographs there.
I am looking for light, connection, and the spaces where your family naturally fits together.
We might photograph beside a bedroom window.
We might use your bed.
We might find a beautifully lit corner of your living room.
The photographs do not need to show every inch of your home.
Instead, I use the parts of your space that photograph beautifully and allow the focus to stay where it belongs: on your baby and your family.
And there is something wonderful about preserving your first home with your baby, even if it is not the home you plan to stay in forever.
Someday, that apartment may be part of the story you tell your child about where their life began.
What If My Newborn Doesn't Sleep During the Session?
Your baby does not have to sleep through their newborn photographs.
My approach to newborn photography is relaxed and baby-led.
If your baby sleeps, wonderful.
If your baby is awake and looking around, we can photograph that too.
If they spend most of the session wanting to be held, they can stay in your arms.
I am much more interested in creating photographs that feel connected and true to your newborn season than forcing your baby into a particular pose or schedule.
This is one of the reasons photographing newborns at home works so beautifully.
We have the flexibility to let the session unfold around your baby.
